ALABAMA ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Who Can Absentee Vote in Alabama?

There are two types of absentee voting in Alabama, and there are different voter qualifications for each.

A registered voter may vote absentee by mail if he/she:

1. Will be absent from the county on election day and the on-site absentee voting day; or
2. Is ill or has a physical disability that prevents a trip to the polling place; or
3. Is a registered Alabama voter living outside the county, such as a member of the armed forces, a voter employed outside of the United States, a college student, or a spouse or child of such a person; or
4. Is an appointed election officer or poll watcher at a polling place other than his/her regular polling place; or
5. Works a required shift, 10 hours or more, that coincides with polling hours.

Any registered voter who will be out of the county on Election Day may vote absentee in person.

How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?

Absentee Voting by Mail: To obtain an absentee ballot, a voter should write to or visit the local absentee election manager (usually the circuit clerk), request an absentee ballot, and provide the following information:

- Applicant's name and residential address (or other such information in order to verify voter registration)
- Election for which the ballot is requested
- Reason for absence
- Party choice (if the election is a party primary)
- Address where ballot should be mailed
- Voter signature

The application must be returned to the absentee election manager in person or by U.S. mail. Applications for absentee voting by mail are due on June 1st for the 2000 presidential primary election and on November 2nd for the 2000 general election.

On-site Absentee Voting: Those interested in absentee voting in person may apply and vote in a single visit to the on-site voting location (this location will be determined by the county absentee election manager).

How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?

Absentee Voting By Mail: The completed ballot may be returned to the absentee election manager by mail or it may be personally delivered. If mailed, the ballot must be postmarked no later than the day prior to the election. If hand-delivered, the ballot must be in the office of the absentee election manager by the close of business (but no later than 5:00 p.m.) on the day before the election.

On-site absentee voting: A voter who will be out of the county on election day may cast an absentee ballot in person on the Saturday 10 days before the election. The voter may cast such a ballot at the location designated for his or her voting precinct. Those interested in on-site absentee voting should contact the county absentee election manager to obtain the location for his/her on-site absentee voting location.

Other Information on Absentee Voting in Alabama

Business/medical emergency voting applications can be made after the absentee deadline but no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day before the election. Voters should contact their county election office for more information on emergency voting.
